Artful Organics by Austin Austin

Artful Organics by Austin Austin
In Article, News

Bessie Austin has always had an entrepreneurial instinct.

“I was scissoring herbs and grasses from our garden when I was 6 years old,” she recalls, “flooding them with water and decanting the mixture into small glass bottles. I labelled them “aftershave” and sold them outside our house for about 5p.”

This early instinct to blend the organic and the commercial comes as no surprise when you know her father is Richard Austin, founder of both Rainbow Wholefoods and Kingfisher Natural Toothpaste.

“I grew up surrounded by organic food, natural products in the bathroom, the teachings of the Dali Lama and the music of 1968,” Bessie shrugs. “For me, this was the status quo.”

At first it seemed unlikely that Bessie would follow Richard into the world of organics, but having spent some years in marketing and design, she has joined the family business. This summer, daughter and father launched Austin Austin, an organic beauty brand offering delicious smelling twin sets for hair, hands and body.

The products use the finest natural ingredients, are fully certified Organic by the Soil Association and COSMOS, and are produced in East Anglia, near to the Austins’ family home.

For Bessie, a key part of her mission is to show her customers how using organic ingredients is not just better for the environment but also beneficial for the skin.

“Organic crops are up to 60% higher in antioxidants compared to non-organic,” she says. “They have a higher count of vitamins, mineral salts, essential fatty and amino acids which are crucial for skin-cell function and repair.” In short, they do good, and they work.

Another priority was the aesthetics. Bessie wanted to build an organic company “that takes considered design and creative aesthetics seriously.” Thus Austin Austin’s packaging concept was born. Environmentally friendly – made using 100% post-consumer plastic – it features drawings by artist Christian Newby, making his first foray into branding.

Newby’s multidisciplinary practice explores both the form of the body and domestic settings.

“As a body care company trying to produce an object that can contribute to the domestic interior, this thinking was particularly interesting to us,” says Bessie. “I believe very passionately that the integrity of the artwork and appearance of the product should match the integrity of the ingredients.”

Integrity is at the heart of Austin Austin and the products they create. Rooted in the shared principles of two generations, and founded in a quest for both quality and awareness, they wind up being that rare thing – effective products that don’t cost the earth, smell delicious and make you think.
